Orangerie and Parterre, Versailles, France — Jules Hardouin-Mansart designed this vast underground greenhouse to shelter 3,000 orange, oleander, and palm trees during winter, arranged on the southern parterre in summer. Louis XIV reportedly loved the scent of orange blossoms and had them blooming throughout the year as a symbol of his dominion over nature itself.
