The golden dome that defines Jerusalem's skyline sits on the Temple Mount — the same ground where the Jewish Temple once stood, where Muhammad ascended to heaven in Islamic tradition. The oldest surviving Islamic monument in the world, completed 691 AD. That dome was regilded in 1994 with 80 kilograms of gold donated by King Hussein of Jordan. It's the first thing you see from almost everywhere in the city, which is by design.
