Street of Tombs, Pompeii, Italy — Roman law required burial outside city limits, so the road leading from the Herculaneum Gate was lined with elaborate funerary monuments housing the ashes or remains of Pompeii's elite. The inscriptions on these tombs provide some of our most detailed information about Pompeian family histories and social hierarchies.
