The Golden Pavilion reflecting in its mirror pond is one of those images that holds up in person — the gold leaf really does burn in winter light. What this photo can't tell you is that the original burned down in 1950 when a novice monk set fire to it. The rebuilt version is arguably better maintained than the original ever was.
