Gion at dusk is the version of Kyoto that most people come looking for. The machiya townhouses on Hanamikoji Street have hosted the geiko arts since the Edo period. Go in the early evening hours — geiko and maiko still walk to engagements here, though increasing tourist pressure has made the district harder to experience quietly.
