Every gate in this four-kilometer tunnel up Mount Inari was donated by a business seeking favor from Inari, deity of prosperity — each one inscribed with the donor's name and date. The shrine dates to 711 AD. The scale of accumulated devotion here, centuries of it, is the thing that actually stops you.
