After 1967, excavations beneath the Jewish Quarter exposed wealthy priestly houses burned when Rome sacked Jerusalem in 70 CE. The Burnt House preserves the ash layer exactly where it fell — along with a stone weight inscribed with a priestly family name. It's one of those archaeological moments where history stops being abstract.
