Tower of David (Jerusalem Citadel), Jerusalem, Israel
The Tower of David wasn't built by David — the name is a medieval misnomer. What's here is a tower Herod the Great built, later rebuilt by Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans in sequence. It guards the Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem's main western entrance, and has served as palace, garrison, and prison across 2,000 years. The history of the citadel is a condensed version of Jerusalem's history generally. © Matson Collection, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
