Suleiman the Magnificent built these walls in the 1530s on foundations that include Roman, Byzantine, and Crusader stonework. Inside: one square kilometer, four quarters, and somewhere north of 40 changes of political control over 3,000 years. The walls are the arrival — everything that follows happens within them.
