Dolmabahce Palace, Istanbul, Turkey — Sultan Abdulmecid I built this spectacular European-style palace on the Bosphorus shore to signal Ottoman modernity, its 285 rooms furnished with 36 tons of gold. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk died here in 1938, and the palace clocks are still stopped at 9:05 AM — the moment of his death.
