Shanhaiguan Pass is where the wall meets the sea — the eastern terminus, still bearing the calligraphy of its proud title: 'First Pass under Heaven.' The wall begins here, or ends here, depending on which direction you're reading history. Either way, it's as far as the Ming emperors needed to go.
