Jiayuguan Fort stood at the far western edge of the Ming wall and the edge of the known world — the 'First and Greatest Pass under Heaven,' as its builders called it. Silk Road caravans passed through its gates heading west; exiled officials passed through heading in the same direction, leaving civilization behind. The wall doesn't start here. It ends here.
