Mendut Temple, Central Java, Indonesia — The smaller temple 3 kilometers east of Borobudur houses three of the finest Buddhist statues in Southeast Asia: a colossal enthroned Sakyamuni Buddha flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani. Tradition holds that pilgrims began their Borobudur journey here before walking in procession to the great monument.
