Ahu Ature Huki, Anakena Beach, Easter Island — This solitary moai on the white coral sand of Anakena was one of the first statues re-erected in modern times, raised by Thor Heyerdahl’s 1956 expedition using wooden levers and stone ramps. The experiment demonstrated that the island’s ancient technology was sufficient to raise even massive statues.
