Temple of the Jaguars, Chichen Itza, c. 900 AD — built into the east wall of the Great Ball Court, this temple features elaborate carvings of jaguars and eagles devouring human hearts. Its upper chamber contains murals depicting battle scenes that chronicle the city's conquest of rival Maya states.
