The garden facade stretches 680 meters — one of the longest royal facades in the world. Louis XIV moved his entire court and government here from Paris in 1682: 20,000 people, including 6,000 nobles kept deliberately idle with elaborate rituals designed to prevent them from plotting against him. The palace wasn't just a residence. It was a control mechanism.
