The Villa of the Mysteries fresco covers the walls of the villa's largest room at life size — a winged figure, a flagellant, a triumphant dancer, all in 'Pompeii red' from mercury sulfide pigment. Scholars still disagree on what exactly is being depicted. That ambiguity is part of why it's held up for two thousand years.
