The Valley of the Kings — 63 tombs cut into limestone cliffs that have stood for over three millennia. Almost every one was robbed in antiquity, which makes Carter's 1922 find of Tutankhamun's intact tomb all the more staggering. The pyramidal peak of Al-Qurn rises above it naturally, as if the site chose itself.
