Medinet Habu (Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III), Luxor West Bank, Egypt — The best-preserved mortuary temple in Thebes features walls covered with carved battle scenes from Ramesses III's victories over the Sea Peoples — the mysterious coalition that nearly destroyed Egyptian civilization around 1177 BC. Its fortified entrance gate (migdol) resembles Syrian architecture and was the only New Kingdom temple to serve as a refuge during later periods of unrest.
