This 24-meter vermilion torii was built to mark the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. The shrine behind it is a two-thirds-scale replica of the original Heian Palace, built when Emperor Kammu moved the capital here in 794 AD and named it 'Capital of Peace and Tranquility.'
