Platform of the Eagles and Jaguars, Chichen Itza, Mexico — This low rectangular platform is carved with alternating panels of eagles and jaguars holding human hearts in their claws or beaks. These military orders of eagle and jaguar warriors are known from Toltec and Aztec traditions, and their appearance at Chichen Itza is another marker of central Mexican cultural influence.
