Khan el-Khalili, Cairo — founded in 1382 on the site of a Fatimid royal cemetery, and operating without meaningful interruption ever since. Spice merchants, gold souks, perfumers, copper craftsmen — the lanes have changed little in six centuries. Al-Fishawy coffeehouse nearby has been serving tea continuously for over 200 years. This is the living city underneath the ancient one.
