At the archaeological site of the Theatre of Dionysus in Athens. In the background the Acropolis.
Theatre of Dionysus, Athens — carved into the southern slope of the Acropolis in the 5th century BC, the birthplace of Western drama. Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes all premiered their plays here. The stone seating for 17,000 survives; the priests of Dionysus sat in the ornate front-row thrones. © George E.
