The Temple of Hephaestus has stood nearly complete in the Ancient Agora since 415 BC — the best-preserved ancient Greek temple in existence. It survived because it was converted to a church in the 7th century AD. In the open space below, Socrates questioned everyone he met, and was eventually tried and executed here in 399 BC for impiety and corrupting the youth.
