Agricultural Terraces, Machu Picchu, Peru — cascading stone platforms descend the mountainside, each level creating a distinct microclimate for growing different crops at altitude. The Inca filled them with layers of gravel, sand, and topsoil carried up from the valley, an engineering feat that also prevented landslides on the steep slopes.
