Michelangelo painted this ceiling largely alone between 1508 and 1512 — 500 square meters of it, lying on scaffolding. The Creation of Adam is the most reproduced image in Western art, and seeing the full ceiling in person is a different experience than any reproduction suggests. Book the Vatican Museums early; this room gets crowded fast.
