Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome — built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD, converted into a papal fortress in the medieval period, and connected to the Vatican by a secret elevated passageway called the Passetto di Borgo, used by popes fleeing enemies.
