Tiger Woods golfing in 2022

A little before two on a Friday afternoon in late March, Tiger Woods tried to pass a truck on a two-lane road on Jupiter Island and clipped the back of it. His Range Rover rolled onto its driver's side and slid. Nobody was hurt. The truck driver told deputies he'd seen Woods coming at high speed in his mirror. When officers arrived, they found Woods lethargic. He agreed to a breathalyzer — no alcohol — but refused the urine test. He was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. By midnight he'd bonded out of Martin County Jail.

Who's Who?

That's the headline. Here's the story nobody's writing: there are seven kids in the middle of this, and every one of them is old enough to read the news.

Tiger has two children with his ex-wife Elin Nordegren — Sam, 18, and Charlie, 17. Both attend The Benjamin School in Palm Beach. Charlie has been making a name for himself in junior golf, following his father's path in the most literal way possible. Sam is quieter, more private. They've watched their father crash before — the 2009 scandal, the 2017 DUI arrest, the 2021 rollover that nearly cost him his leg. This is the third time their father has made national news for something other than golf.

Vanessa Trump has five children with her ex-husband Donald Trump Jr. — Kai (18), Donald III (17), Tristan (14), Spencer (13), and Chloe (11). Kai also attends The Benjamin School and is an emerging golfer herself, which is how the two families' worlds overlap. When Vanessa started dating Tiger in early 2025, the kids were already in each other's orbit. Same school, same sport, same stretch of South Florida coastline.

Donald Trump Jr. said he was 'cool' with Tiger dating his ex-wife. His father, the former president, said he 'loves' both Tiger and Vanessa. That was before the Range Rover flipped. After the arrest, Trump Jr. was reportedly furious — not about the relationship, but about his children being in Tiger's world. According to reports, Secret Service agents assigned to the former president's grandchildren had already decided that Tiger wouldn't be driving the kids, DUI or not. The arrest just made the unspoken rule explicit.

Vanessa reportedly issued an ultimatum. Sources told the Daily Mail she was 'not happy at all' and 'both disappointed and a little bit pissed.' She told Tiger he needed to get things sorted out or she wasn't going to stick around. Tiger, for his part, was described as 'very apologetic' and wanting to fix things.

Then there's Elin Nordegren, watching all of this from a distance that isn't very far at all. Elin lives in Florida with her partner Jordan Cameron, a former NFL tight end. Together they're raising a blended family of six children — her two with Tiger plus three of their own. A source told People that Elin was 'concerned' after the crash and 'wants him to be well.' She's been through this before. She knows what comes next.

The truck driver — unnamed in every report — was just turning into a driveway when Tiger came up behind him at high speed. He's the only person in this story who didn't sign up for any of it.

Jupiter Island is a narrow barrier island where the houses cost tens of millions and the roads are two lanes. Tiger's home in nearby Hobe Sound is minutes away. The Benjamin School is a short drive. The crash site at 281 South Beach Road is in the middle of all of it. This isn't a big city where famous people can disappear into traffic. Everyone here knows everyone. The truck driver probably knows whose driveway he was turning into. The deputies who responded probably know Tiger by sight. That's the thing about a small community with big names — when something goes wrong, there's nowhere to hide, and the kids are always close by.
