Al-Khazneh (The Treasury), Petra, Jordan — This 40-meter-high facade was carved from a single sandstone cliff by Nabataean artisans blending Hellenistic columns with Eastern decorative motifs. Almost certainly a royal tomb, it earned its name from the local legend that a pharaoh hid treasure in the urn crowning its upper story.
