Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, Turkey — Mehmed II began this sprawling hilltop palace overlooking the Bosphorus, Golden Horn, and Sea of Marmara shortly after conquering Constantinople. For 400 years it served as the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire, housing the sultan, his harem, and thousands of officials and servants.
