Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque), Istanbul, Turkey — Sultan Ahmed I built this imperial mosque opposite Hagia Sophia, completing it in just seven years. Its six minarets — uniquely audacious for an Ottoman mosque — were said to have caused a diplomatic incident as only the mosque at Mecca had previously claimed that number.
