El Caracol Observatory, Chichen Itza, Mexico — This round tower with its distinctive spiral staircase and slit windows aligned to astronomical phenomena allowed Maya priests to track Venus and predict celestial events. The Maya Venus calendar, derived from such observations, was accurate to one day in 6,000 years.
