Borobudur Central Stupa, Java, Indonesia — The 9-meter-diameter central stupa at the monument's summit is empty — representing sunyata (emptiness) or nirvana, the state beyond all form and description. When 19th-century Dutch excavators opened it, they found only a few ritual objects and an unfinished Buddha statue, possibly deliberately left incomplete as a symbol of the ineffable.
