Palace of Charles V, Alhambra, Granada, Spain — Holy Roman Emperor Charles V ordered this Renaissance circular-courtyard palace built within the Alhambra complex, destroying part of the Nasrid palace in the process. The contrast between its classical columns and the surrounding Islamic architecture creates one of history's most jarring architectural juxtapositions.
