Marie Antoinette's Petit Trianon, Versailles, France — Built for Louis XV and given to Marie Antoinette by Louis XVI in 1774, this neoclassical retreat became the queen's personal sanctuary away from Versailles protocol. The queen decorated it in her own taste and created an informal English garden behind it, complete with an artificial hamlet (le Hameau de la Reine) where she could play at being a simple shepherdess.
