Taj Mahal Mosque, Agra, India — The red sandstone mosque to the west of the mausoleum, built of sandstone to contrast with the white marble tomb, is a functional place of Islamic worship and a structurally necessary counterbalance. An identical 'jawab' (answer) building on the east side serves only as a visual mirror, as a mosque must face Mecca and cannot be duplicated.
