The Sistine Chapel, Vatican City — Michelangelo painted the 500-square-meter ceiling lying on scaffolding between 1508 and 1512, completing it largely alone. The Creation of Adam, two figures reaching toward each other across a gap of empty sky, is perhaps the most reproduced image in Western art.
