High Place of Sacrifice, Petra, Jordan — Atop the Attuf Ridge at 1,035 meters elevation, this flat-topped altar platform with carved channels for draining sacrificial blood was the chief open-air religious sanctuary of the Nabataeans. Two 6-meter obelisks carved from the living rock flank the approach, representing the Nabataean gods Dushara and Al-Uzza.
