Mont Saint-Michel Village Street (Grande Rue), Normandy, France, medieval — The steep main street climbing from the island gate to the abbey entrance has been lined with pilgrims' hospices, taverns, and souvenir stalls since medieval times. Today the same lanes sell crepes and mother-of-pearl ornaments where 13th-century merchants sold pilgrim badges and holy water.
