Cloister of Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy, France — The delicate double arcade of marble columns at the abbey's summit, arranged at a slight angle to create visual variety, is considered one of the finest examples of Norman Gothic decorative carving. The central garden, open to the sky, was where monks walked in meditation above the clouds and the tidal bay.
