Colossi of Memnon, Luxor West Bank, Egypt — These two 18-meter quartzite statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III are all that survive of what was once Egypt's largest mortuary temple. The northern statue famously emitted a musical tone at dawn due to heating air in a crack — a sound the Greeks identified as the hero Memnon greeting his mother Eos, goddess of the dawn.
