Hatshepsut Mortuary Temple (Deir el-Bahari), Luxor, Egypt — The female pharaoh Hatshepsut built this three-terraced temple against the sheer cliffs of the Theban hills in one of antiquity's most elegant designs. Her successor Thutmose III systematically defaced her image and name throughout the temple, attempting to erase her reign from history.
