Ryoanji Rock Garden, Kyoto, Japan — Fifteen carefully arranged stones sit in a rectangle of raked white gravel, enclosed by earthen walls stained with age and moss. No matter where you stand at the viewing veranda, only 14 stones are visible at once — the 15th remaining forever hidden, a metaphor for enlightenment beyond human perception.
