Jerusalem Old City Walls, Jerusalem, Israel — Suleiman the Magnificent built the current Ottoman walls encircling the Old City, with eight gates and 34 watchtowers, on foundations that include stones from earlier Roman, Byzantine, and Crusader fortifications. The Old City enclosed within was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
