Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey — Justinian I constructed this underground reservoir beneath Constantinople to supply water to the imperial palace complex. Its forest of 336 marble columns — some resting on carved Medusa heads — supported a ceiling capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters of water.
