Shanhaiguan Pass, Hebei, China — The 'First Pass under Heaven' at the eastern terminus marks where the wall meets the Bohai Sea, its fortress gate still bearing the calligraphy of that proud title. In 1644 AD the Ming general Wu Sangui opened these gates to Manchu forces, a decision that ended the Ming Dynasty and established the Qing.
