Terrace Houses (Yamacev Evleri), Ephesus, Turkey — Six multi-story residential apartments belonging to wealthy Roman citizens preserve stunning floor-to-ceiling mosaics and frescoes of the 1st through 3rd centuries. One dining room ceiling still bears a painted philosopher-and-muse composition of remarkable sophistication; private latrines had heated floors.
