Tzompantli (Skull Rack), Chichen Itza, Mexico — This platform near the Great Ball Court is covered entirely in carved stone skulls displayed in profile, representing the wooden rack where severed heads of sacrificial victims and ball game losers were displayed. Its iconography is far more characteristic of central Mexican cultures than typical Maya tradition.
