Sacred Cenote (Cenote Sagrado), Chichen Itza, Mexico — This natural limestone sinkhole 60 meters across and 20 meters deep received ritual offerings for over a millennium. Dredging operations in 1904 and 1967 recovered gold discs, jade ornaments, copal incense, pottery, and the bones of men, women, and children sacrificed to the rain god Chaac.
