Citadel of Saladin and Muhammad Ali Mosque, Cairo, 1176 AD
Citadel of Saladin and Muhammad Ali Mosque, Cairo — Saladin began the Citadel in 1176 AD as an impregnable fortress against the Crusaders. Within its walls, the Muhammad Ali Mosque — the Alabaster Mosque — was built 1830–1848 in a style echoing the great Ottoman mosques of Istanbul. Together they represent nine centuries of military and religious power on a single hilltop. © Silar, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons
